Tuesday, April 10: Screening of (A)Sexual in Columbia University, New York

Tuesday, April 10 – Screening of (A)Sexual with lead activist David Jay and filmmaker  Angela Tucker
8:15-10:15pm, JG 106
Sponsored by OutLaws, Law/Culture, the Center for Gender and Sexuality Law, and Professor Emens’ Employment Discrimination Law class.

Facing a sex obsessed culture, a mountain of stereotypes and misconceptions, and a paucity of social or scientific research, asexuals—people who experience no sexual attraction—struggle to claim their identity. The documentary film (A)sexual follows the growth of a community that experiences no sexual attraction. In 2000, David Jay came out to his parents. He was asexual and was fine with it. And he was not alone. Studies suggest that 1% of the population is asexual. But in a society obsessed with sex, how do you deal with life as an outsider? Combining intimate interviews, verite footage, and animation with fearless humor and pop culture imagery, David and four other characters grapple with this universal question.

What’s the legal angle? Asexuals are protected from discrimination under New York’s Sexual Orientation Non-Discrimination Act. What might discrimination against asexuals look like? How does it compare to discrimination against other protected groups? What direction should the law go with regard to asexuality? And what can this emerging identity category teach us about antidiscrimination law and politics more generally? Discussion after the film—with lead activist David Jay and filmmaker Angela Tucker—will probe these questions, as well as anything else this provocative film brings to your mind.

languageotaku asked: Hello. I'm an asexual, living near NYC who'd love to join the facebook group and go to the meetups, except some of my family members who I'm friends with on facebook aren't very ace friendly. I was wondering if joining/posting in groups comes up in notifications, or if you know of any way to block people from seeing group activity? Thank you.

Hello! Unfortunately, the facebook group is an open group, in order to make it easier for people to find us on facebook. One way to block people from seeing certain activity is to put them on the “restricted” list, which lets you choose what you allow them to see.

You can find out about meetups in other ways, though, like by monitoring this tumblr and/or checking the NYC Meetup Thread on AVEN.

Hope that helps! :)

Potential Meetup: NYC Aces

Heeeey there, meetup group! We’re thinking about having another short-notice meetup this Sunday (January 29th) involving going to see the Lunar New Year parade in China Town (and food- somehow there will be food).

No exact details yet, but would anyone be interested? This has also been posted on the facebook group, which might be easier to reply to.

Oh the adventures we have! Hope more people can join next time. :)

Meetup!

Last-minute meetup this sunday. Unfortunately, there’s only room for 10 people (it’s a small-ish place and they require a reservation), so it’s first come first serve. I’ve already heard back from Mag, Poe, and Haji. So that leaves room for 6 more people. Anyone interested? Particularly any newbies? We’d love to meet some new people and we’re super friendly and accepting. :)

Plus there’s also a deal where if four or five people chip in about $22 each, that’s UNLIMITED scones, sandwiches, cookies, tea, etc. Plus the more who chip in, the cheaper it gets. If everyone chipped it, it’d be under $20 a person. So why not, eh?

DATE: Sunday, January 8th
TIME: 1pm
PLACE: Alice’s Tea Cup
Manhattan: 156 E 64th

Please RSVP as soon as possible to this thread or send a message. :) Good luck!

I’ve also posted this to the facebook group. No replies yet, so I’ll be checking here and fb and will alert when the spots are filled.

Quick post to let you all know this blog is still running (and hello new follower!)

It’s starting to get cold- hope you’re all staying warm! Planning meetups during the winter months is difficult due to the weather…if anyone has any ideas, post in the facebook group, send a message here, or reblog this message.

Hello, new followers~

I keep forgetting to check the tumblr- hahaha. xD It’s nice to see so many new people. Hope some of you can make it to the next meetup…whenever that may be!

It’s Winter Break currently for those of us who are students, so for some people that might mean more opportunities to attend.

Hopefully we’ll have a plan for a meetup in the near future~

In the meanwhile, here’s a random photo of some taxis by Central Park:
